Vishu, the Malyali new year, usually falls in April. The highlight is Vishukkanni which involves seeing auspicious things like rice, vegetables, flowers betel leaves, coins, a mirror and other things on waking up. Lights, firecrackers and new clothes are part of the celebrations.
A Roman Catholic Church built in striking granite, the church is dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health, and is also known as the Velankanni Matha Church. Its annual feast is held from September 1 to 8 and is marked by prayers, festivities and processions.
Take a boat ride on the amazing Periyar lake, located inside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Surrounded by thick forested hills, the lake is spectacular and a boat ride is ideal to savor its beauty. Making the scene more surreal are the tree stumps that rise haphazardly out of the water surface. If skimming the water surface in a boat seems a bit staid, then opt for a bamboo rafting which promises to be wild and exciting. Gently flowing or drifting along in serenity but with this ancient contraptions provides an altogether different experience.
For those lazy days, settle in the activity centre which has a plethora of games and activities. Or if you feel like just lounging around, pick up a book from the library and settle down for a good read.
If you are the kind that gets a high from trekking through wild forests, then sign up for a jungle trek. Choose your activity level and head into the untamed beauty for a session of gazing on thick foliage and the animals that abound the forests around.
If you are keen to experience the jungle but are too lazy to make the effort for a trek, then ask for an elephant ride. Heading off into the wild greenery but situated many feet above the ground gives a unique perspective of the jungle.
The best way to soak up the spectacular natural beauty of Thekkady is to go on long walks on the winding roads. Wind your way through the spice gardens growing cardamom, cinnamon, clove and black pepper.
