Nathu-La

Surrounded by snow clad mountains

The Nathu-La pass is one of India’s trading posts with China, and among the highest motorable roads in the world. Surrounded by the snow clad mountains, the route is a scenic one, though you need a permit to visit. The pass is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for visitors.

Baba Mandir

Shrine to a young soldier

Beyond Nathu-La is the Baba Mandir, a shrine to Harbhajan Singh, a young soldier who died here. His spirit is believed to live on, protecting and warning his comrades from sudden attacks, and fulfilling wishes of his devotees. There is also a new shrine built to him near Nathu-la.

Kanchenjunga

Gangtok is situated in a valley, and every peak offers superb views of the Kanchenjunga. Hanuman Tok , Ganesh Tok and Tashi View point are the three sites with the best views of the snow clad mountains. Visit Tashi view point at dawn or dusk for the best views of the sunrise or sunset.

Himalayan Zoological Park

Red Panda is the biggest attraction

The Gangtok Zoo, spread over 230 hectares, houses animals in huge enclosures replicating their natural environment. The zoo covers an entire hill, and the biggest attractions here are the Snow Leopard and the Red Panda.

Tsongmo Lake

Stop here for a Yak ride

The Tsongmo Lake, also called the Tsomgo Lake, or Changu Lake, is considered a holy lake, and there is a small temple on its banks. The lake is on the way to Nathu-La, and you can stop here for a Yak ride, or to play in the snow and grab a bite of the local version of noodles and soup.

The birth anniversary of Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Sikkim, is celebrated with great pomp throughout the state. In Gangtok, a procession carrying his statute is carried around the town. Chaams or traditional dances are performed at Rumtek Monastery, depicting episodes from his life.

Losar

The Tibetan New Year or Losar is celebrated in January / February with grand celebrations at the monasteries. The festival is celebrated over three days, concluding on the new year, with the monks performing the Cham dance, dressed in colourful costumes. Some of the monasteries even have fireworks.
