The Moyar River plunges into a dramatic 20 kms long gorge and cascades into the Moyar Waterfall - a sight to be seen in season.
A placid lake located in the hills is a getaway from Ooty for those who want to enjoy pristine nature. Go for boating and drift away aimlessly in the waters.
One of the tiger reserves in Tamil Nadu, it is home to tigers, elephants, gaurs and sloth bears. The reserve is a bird watcher’s paradise with several resident and endemic species besides reptiles, fish and amphibians.There are several view points in the sanctuary as well .The elephant camp is home to over 20 captive elephants who help in patrolling the areas.
Spread over 55 acres is a paradise in a world tinged with emerald. The Ooty Botanical Gardens is a must see in the hill station and a great haunt for birdwatchers. If you walk a little interior, you can meet the Todas as well here. Another park that should be visited is Sims Park in Coonoor.
Dedicated to Murugan, the temple on Elk Hill is famous for its annual Thaipoosam festival where the deity is brought back to the town. The shrine is a replica of the temple inside Batu Caves in Malaysia.

There are several churches in the Nilgiris - both catholic and protestant but the most famous is the St Stephens Church built in the 19th century .It is believed that the timber used in the church was taken from Tipu Sultan’s palace in Srirangapatna. With beautiful stain glass and scenes narrating events from the Bible, the church is a must see. Another important church is the Holy Trinity Church , one of the oldest landmarks of Ooty.

In January every year, the tourism department organises a three day tea festival in Ooty. Tourists can visit tea plantations and factories, sample and buy tea and taking in the festivities.
Thousands of devotees throng the Nilgiris during the celebration of Thaipoosam in Elk Hill Murugan temple, the deity often referred to as the God of Tamils. It is celebrated in the month of February . Offerings are given in galore as the deity is carried downhill to the town.
The temples in Ooty and Coonoor dedicated to the Goddess Mariamman, the Goddess of Rain and a form of Kali and Durga , celebrate their annual festival in April every year. Many devotees walk barefoot , sometimes on burning coal to show their devotion.

There are plenty of birds in and around the resort or you can go to Doddabetta or the Botanical Gardens to look for birds..The Nilgiris is home to over 250 species of birds, including endemic and endangered species.

There are several hiking and trekking routes around the hills. You can visit dams, plantations or just hike up the hills .Guides are available to take you into the forests and around the hills. Caution is advised however as you can see gaurs and sometimes even elephants or the big cats on the way.
Visit plantations, head to shola forests - the journey is the destination here as you can meander around hairpin bends and look for lakes and dams in the mountains.
